A power optimizer is a DC-DC converter commonly used between a solar module and its accompanying inverter. Optimizers may be installed on individual modules, performing Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) on every module in a system rather than letting an inverter perform MPPT on the system as a whole. This improves overall efficiency and prevents individual panel shading from degrading the output of surrounding panels. Power optimizers are preferred over micro-inverters because they are constructed from much more reliable and longer-lasting components.
